The President of the Republic, Iván Duque Márquez, will present this December 10 in Cartagena, the Comprehensive Public Policy of Guarantees and Respect for the work of defending Human Rights.
The policy, led by the Ministry of Interior and formulated with the participation of leaders and defenders of Human Rights in the territories, will result in an inter-institutional action plan and a CONPES document to prevent and protect, individually and collectively, life and the rights of leaders, representatives and activists of human rights, social and community organizations in the country, and to provide guarantees for their work.
“With their actions, social leaders are not only defending human life and the possibility that it may be lived with freedom and dignity. With their actions, they are defending Democracy, Legality, Equity and the possibility of a better country for all”, said Interior Minister Nancy Patricia Gutiérrez.
The formulation of the Public Policy to defend human rights defenders was built in more than 114 working groups, which had the participation of human rights defenders, of more than 160 civil servants and / or public servants, both of the national and territorial order, of civil society, the international community, territorial entities, the private sector and State institutions.
“The National Government works to provide the guarantees and protection required for the exercise of its work. It is worth noting that, in the formulation of public policy, 370 human rights defenders from 17 departments have participated. This allows us to have a policy based on the personal experience of social leaders, the risks they face due to their work and the initiatives to deal with them effectively”, said the Minister.
The event will recognize the importance of the work carried out by the leaders, social leaders and defenders of Human Rights. Likewise, the leaders and social leaders, international organizations, the National Government and representatives of different sectors of the society will discuss key aspects for the defense of human rights and the protection of their defenders. The event will take place from 7:30 a.m. at the Cartagena Convention Center and will be part of the Commemoration of International Human Rights Day.
